Gandhi was an unlikely commercial success because it dealt with the life and work of a non-Westerner andmore importantlyone who was not sumptuously dressed, who did not command vast armies or wealth, whose life was not filled with scandalous sexual passions, and who did not make a career that in any way contributed to the aid or comfort of the West.
