One Deuce pilot came so close to a Soviet bomber to photograph what appeared to be a camera port that the Soviet Union filed a diplomatic protest. Similar missions were carried out by the 327th FIS, whose F-1 02s rose from Thule AB, Greenland, to meet Soviet aircraft over the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. Previously based at George AFB, California, the "Iron Mask" squadron traded in their original F-102s for those with Case XX wings and arctic markings in preparation for deployment to Thule.

Both were examples of the steady decline in Alaska's military forces, which was aggravated by the growing conflict in Southeast Asia.
