Less than a year later, during Colin’s second year of college, the conflict in Vietnam began to escalate. The following year, 1956, an African-American woman named Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to sit in the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. And a young preacher named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was jailed for his nonviolent protests. In the fall of 1957, as Colin was returning to school, troops escorted nine black students into Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Margaret’s Episcopal Church. Luther was senior warden, a lay leader, at St. Margaret’s. Arie was the head of the altar guild, and Marilyn played the piano at the children’s service. The Powell family helped out with the church bazaar, bake sale, and annual dance, and Sundays found the Powells seated in their family pew. Luther and Arie had been raised in the Anglican Church in Jamaica. St. Margaret’s, with its formal style of worship, spires, altars, and priests, reminded them of those churches.
