    The first complex sentences expand the grammatical object, as in [I see [you sit down]] (Limber 1973). (Square brackets, [], are used here to mark the boundaries of each clause in these examples.) There is not one example of expansion in the grammatical subject (as in [[To play a clarinet] is hard]) until age three.     Many people seem to have been taught (mistakenly) that none always means “not one” (as in, None of the chickens is hatched).     This is different to some communication systems where, for example, males produce one set of behaviours and females another and they are unable to interchange these messages so that males use the female signal and vice versa. Name signs are not used to address people, as names are in English, but are used only for third-person reference, and usually only when the person is absent. Such cumulative modifications allow for what Tomasello calls a “ratchet effect”: a “cycle in which an improvement is made, becomes standard for the group, and then becomes a basis for further innovation.” (Sterelny 2003: 150-1) The idea of cumulative niche construction has obvious application to the case of language.
