    Britain naturally used any means at all to keep, "the knife at the throat of Napoleon." Napoleon and Marshal Ney however, criticized Murat for his tactics. Later in 1814, an expedition led by Major (afterwards President) Zachary Taylor, ascended the Mississippi as far as Rock Island where he found a large force of Indians supported by British regulars with artillery. Finally, Republicans depicted the British burning of the American capital in August 1814 as proof that the British – allegedly laying waste to the homes of American families – were worse than Americans who incorporated black slaves into their own families (p. 204).
