Wills (Eds.), Formal approaches to categorization. The Psychology Department includes over 40 full-time faculty members. Many CBT treatment programs for specific disorders have been evaluated for efficacy and effectiveness; the health-care trend of evidence-based treatment, where specific treatments for symptom-based diagnoses are recommended, has favored CBT over other approaches such as psychodynamic treatments. The only real similarities between the two is that they are both attempts to explain human behaviour, and they are both old theories which have been replaced by other, more recent approaches (such as congitive behaviourism- which takes the best of both theories- and social psychology- which looks at how our interactions with others shape our behaviour) Behaviourism only concerns itself with the behaviour that can be observed.

Some investigators focus on relationships between brain structures and behavior, some work with computer simulation, and others work at more abstract philosophical levels. Mind, brain, and computation can each be used to suggest new ideas about the others. Morris and Todd (1995) summarize the behavioralists’ position in this regard, explaining that “while behaviorists define mental states in terms of stimuli and responses, they d[o] not think mental states were themselves [the] causes of the responses and the effects of the stimuli (p. 80).

Pinkers observation has implications, as well, for concepts of intelligence, which he defines as the ability to attain goals in the face of obstacles by means of decisions based on rational (truth-obeying) rules (62). If the brain consists of modules for computation, and if these modules vary in precision within individuals, then it makes no sense to talk of general intelligence but only of hundreds (perhaps thousands) of tiny, individual intelligences.
